The Myth of Male Power by Warren Farrell, Ph.D.

The Myth of Male Power is the most powerful piece of work to unravel the power of the feminist movement. Surprisingly, Farrell was on the Board of the National Organization for Women (NOW) in New York City for three years. He uses this experience as an asset in understanding the feminist movement.

This book is powerful because it dissects our social structure and explains how and why our society became organized into the current structure. He says women are being protected by the men, not being oppressed by men.

He proves that men also have been mistreated in our society and have less rights than women. He points out that men have no rights when women decide if they'll have a baby and when they are drafted. A woman can pursue a man in the workplace. When a man does that, it's sexual harassment.

He asks if women are being oppressed, why are more men killing themselves, facing more criminal acts, dying on the job, becoming homeless, and are being murdered three times more than women? And why does the National Institute of Health receive twice the funding for women's health issues than men's health issues from the government when women are naturally protected by double-X chromosomes, which makes women
healthier than men?

Farrell points out that men have been portrayed unfairly. When men work to provide for their families, they are yelled at for working too much. Some men turn to alcohol when feeling pressure because they weren't taught to express themselves. Then, their wives call them alcoholics.

He notes the protection of women and finger pointing at men during times of crisis. A female air traffic controller who was responsible for the death of 34 individuals in a plane crash was protected by the Federal Aviation Association. First of all, her name was kept confidential. Then she was provided with counseling by the Federal Aviation Association. On the other, Captain Joseph Hazelwood's name was made public when the Exxon Valdez spilled millions of gallons of oil and killed wildlife off the coast of Alaska. He was sent to prison for killing wildlife while the unknown female air controller received a sentence of counseling for killing 34 people.

The power of this book is strong enough to affect every reader for the rest of his or her life. It will make you rethink about ever calling men oppressers and unfeeling individuals. This is the one of the books needed to understand our society, men, women, and the feminist movement.
